Megan Lilias Kane - Cinderella Interview

Production company New Horizons Productions are launching their first pantomime this April at the West Community Centre in Sunderland, with their production of Cinderella. The show will run from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th April. Tickets are available here. Ahead of this, I spoke with cast member Megan Lilias Kane about performing in the show.

Megan first explained more about the production. "The show is Cinderella, written by Tom Whalley. It's New Horizons’ first pantomime, so it’s all very exciting. Pretty much, It’s your typical panto but with a bit of a musical theatre twist."

"I’m a member of the ensemble. It’s my first time doing panto and also being in an ensemble, so I was a little nervous about joining the cast but everyone’s been super welcoming."

Megan opened up about what attracted her to be a part of the show. "I’ve never done a panto before, most of my experience has been on screen and with musicals. When I read about the auditions being held I was sort of at this crossroad, I was just finishing the show that I was currently in and really felt like I wanted to do something different once I had finished that job, but at the same time I wasn’t exactly ready to try and do something totally different to anything I’ve done before - so when I saw that it wasn’t just a pantomime, but it was also a musical I was immediately intrigued."

The talk turned to what first inspired Megan to perform. "I think in general performing is always something I wanted to do, like when I was a kid I was always singing along and learning the dances from Disney films like High School Musical and Cheetah Girls - but I remember there was this one moment in specific when I went to London to see Wicked with my parents around ten years ago. The moment the show started I just remember thinking how cool everyone was and how much fun it must be to be able to perform such an amazing show to so many people! I think I pretty much walked out of the theatre and had completely made my mind up that that was what I wanted to do with my life."

Being New Horizon's first pantomime is something Megan finds "Super exciting! It’s so cool to be able to say that you’re part of something that’s being created by a fairly new company. I feel very lucky to be part of it."

Megan explained her excitement for the production explaining "Honestly, I’m really looking forward to when we start tech. It can be a stressful time with any show when it all starts getting really serious, you want to make sure you’re doing everything right and really putting yourself into it to make sure you’re doing the best you can. However, it’s also the best feeling ever when you get to see everything coming together and all your hard work being paid off! You just get this really nice wholesome feeling and feel so proud of everyone."

Cinderella is combining various styles of songs, from stage and screen and Megan explained she's most looking forward to performing "Come Alive from The Greatest Showman. It’s one of my favourite films ever. That being said, there are so many amazing numbers within the show."

Megan finally discussed why she thought audiences should come and see the show. "It opens in April and I think that’s a really interesting time to be doing a pantomime, I feel like most of them are definitely done around Christmas - but you know, pantomimes give you this really nice feeling especially when you’re watching them with your family, it brings everyone together. I think having the chance to experience something like this outside of Christmas time is something people really don’t want to miss out on! The cast is also absolutely stellar."

Cinderella runs at West Community Centre in Sunderland from Thursday 21st to Sun 24th April. Tickets are available now from here.
