As part of our Edinburgh Fringe 2024 coverage, we are running a series of interviews with artists and creatives that are taking part in the festival.
In this interview, we speak to Toby Hampton about In Defiance of Gravity
Where did your arts career begin?
My first professional credit was with Unleash The Llama so it feels really lovely to be working together again 6 years later on their biggest project to date.
What can you tell me about your show?
It’s a dark and delicious delight with an excellent script, a tense soundtrack and some stellar acting.
How would you describe the style of the show?
It’s a period piece with plenty of modern outrageousness. It will make an audience laugh before shivering their spines in the space of two or three lines.
How have you approached developing the piece?
It’s been a brilliantly collaborative process with the actors and there’s been a great togetherness among the group.
How do/will you prepare yourself for a run at the Fringe?
Eat plenty of greens!
Other than the show, what’s something you’re looking forward to doing in Edinburgh this year?
I just love the ambience of the whole festival - I can’t wait to be in the thick of it again.
What keeps you inspired?
The love of the handful of people that I love back – plus a reasonable amount of red wine
What do you hope an audience takes away from seeing the show?
I really don’t mind! But I do hope that any piece of work I create can make people feel something - what that something is, is up to them! That’s why I love theatre!
Where can audiences see the show?
Summerhall (Demo Room) - 1-26 Aug @ 9:15pm
