Ian Stone will embark on his first UK national tour with his new acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe 2024 show, ‘Ian Stone is Keeping it Together’, kicking off in Leicester at Firebug on 13 September, including London’s Comedy Store on 18 November and ending in Birmingham at The Glee Club on 29 November.
Ian IS keeping it together but only just. Yes, he has all his own hair and teeth and keeps a tight control over his between meal snacking but what does it matter when there’s war in the middle east and Donald Trump could be allowed back (back!!) into the White House? How can there be such terrible pain and suffering in the world even though Ian always rates his WhatsApp calls, package delivery and parking experience? And what happens to all the pens he buys? These and other questions will get the answers they deserve.
Ahead of the tour opening in Leicester we spoke to Ian to learn more.
What can you tell me about your show?
My show is called Ian Stone is Keeping it Together. It's an exploration of all the things that need to be done (personally and also by the people who run the country) to keep it together. With jokes, stories and ad libs as and when required. It also highlights some areas where we're falling short (in almost every way to be honest).
It's me complaining in a funny way. It's a very Jewish way of dealing with the world.
How do you go about preparing a new show?
I've mined some personal trauma for this show but in the main, I watch the news and when things piss me off, I write them down. And when I've got enough things written down, I formulate them into some sort of narrative and go out on the road and tell people.
How do you reflect on your career to date and how has your own growth impacted on your comedy?
For a long time, I couldn't quite believe that I was getting away with it. I guess that after thirty three years, I must have something going for me. As for my own personal growth, I don't think I'm hugely different from how I was when I started. Perhaps a touch more confidence but essentially, the same idiot I always was.
If your show was a biscuit, what would it be and why?
I'd say a Jammy dodger. Because anyone who gets to do this shit for a living is definitely jammy. And I've managed to dodge a proper job since the 1980's.
Can you give me a random fact about you/the show?
I once had a very pleasant conversation about shoes with the football manager Neil Warnock while standing at a urinal. It's not part of the show but i think it's definitely random.
What do you hope an audience takes away from seeing the show?
That they've just witnessed one of the most significant cultural events of the twenty first century and that they're not only fans but also disciples. Failing that, I'd hope that they'd had a laugh.
Where can audiences see the show?
