Cinderella, the most famous pantomime of them all comes to Berkhamsted this Christmas. The production marks the first ever professional pantomime in the town and brings great excitement with it.
Julie Atherton directs the production, which has an impressive cast that includes Veronica Green from RuPaul's Drag Race, Lucy Penrose, and Chris Garside. It is set to delight audiences this festive season.
We caught up with director Julie Atherton to learn more about the production.
What can you tell me about this production of Cinderella?
It's the classic tale with traditional pantomime traits but with a contemporary twist, modern pop music and a headstrong Cinderella! Expect to laugh your Christmas stockings off at Samuel Holmes’ hilarious script. With such a talented cast, the whole family are in for a magical treat.
This production marks Centenary Theatre’s first professional pantomime. How has it been preparing for the run?
It’s actually been a lot of fun as we have such an amazing team of wonderful humans, but obviously a lot to do as it’s Smash Arts first one (of hopefully many)
With some great experience behind you, how much do you enjoy passing on what you’ve learned up till now?
It’s incredibly rewarding getting to pass on skills and tricks, but I learn so much from others too, we are forever learning in this industry.
What are your favourite Christmas traditions?
I love Christmas so any are good with me. But mainly the food! My traditions have changed so much over the years as family grows and changes, but as long as I’m with my loved ones any will do.
Where did your arts career begin?
It began with me at school writing songs to escape. Local theatre productions. Encouragement from a drama teacher. I was always creative and always will be, so as soon as I discovered drama school that was it.
What keeps you inspired?
Music. Seeing the joy that live theatre brings to audiences and collaborating with talented creatives. There’s so much inspiration at our finger tips now!
What do you hope an audience member feels when watching the show?
I hope they have so much fun that they immediately want to book again!
Where can audiences see the show?
The production runs at the Centenary Theatre, Berkhamsted 19 - 31st December. For details on showtimes and tickets, visit https://berkopanto.co.uk/
