As winter's first snow falls, there’s little Christmas cheer in Sherwood. Cupboards are bare, the nights are cold, and the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham squeezes his citizens for every penny they’re worth. But deep in the forest, in the heart of the Major Oak, legendary outlaw Robin Hood plots an audacious scheme to bring some festive joy to all.

Can Robin succeed? Will the Sheriff be defeated? Will the children of Sherwood have anything to celebrate come Christmas Day? Find out when we bring a new chapter of Robin’s adventures to our stage.

This new festive adventure is imagined by Olivier Award winner Chris Bush (Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World) and directed by UK Theatre Award winner Elin Schofield (Rock, Paper Scissors). Featuring members of our talented Rose Youth Theatre alongside a professional cast, the Rose continues its much loved Christmas tradition in 2024.

We caught up with Matthew Ganley who plays Robin Hood in the production.

What can you tell me about this production of Robin Hood And The Christmas Heist?
It's an action packed re-imagining of the traditional tale with a lot of humour and heart. It has great music and a few unexpected twists and turns along the way.

What attracted you to this production?
The writing is so sharp and witty...also, I get to play Robin Hood so I'm fulfilling a childhood dream at 41!

How did you approach finding your own version of the character?
In this version he's a little older and wrestling with the weight of paternal responsibilities. It's very much a journey of re-discovery for Robin and so I grounded him in that truth. The transition of fear into action.

How do you mentally and physically prepare for a performance?
I do a bit of yoga every morning then a physical and vocal warm up at the theatre. Also coffee. Lots of coffee.

How much fun has it been to work alongside the Rose Youth Theatre Company in this production?
It's been a joy. They make me laugh every day.

How do you think you would have coped being an outlaw like Robin Hood?
Pretty good. I'm an outdoor person. I love backpacking, foraging etc. I naturally gravitate towards an off grid lifestyle so I reckon I'd make a decent fugitive.

When did you know that you wanted to be a performer?
Music was my 1st love and I wanted to do that from 10 years old.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
No one else can be you.

What are your favourite Christmas traditions?
Connection with loved ones, films, food, prayer and gratitude.

If you had to buy Robin a Christmas present, what would buy him?
A 21st century bow and arrows with laser precision technology.

What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
A feeling of warmth, connection and a renewed appreciation of live theatre.

Where can audiences see the production?
Robin Hood And The Christmas Heist plays at the Rose Theatre in Kingston until January 5th.
