Direct from down under, Australia’s favourite adults only Christmas comedy is coming to London, and trust us, the tree won’t be the only thing getting lit!
If you like having a laugh, partial nudity and a playlist with everything from classic carols (which you’ll never hear the same way again) to modern pop, A Very Naughty Christmas is the show that’s sure to get you in a holiday mood. So whether you’re planning to be naughty or nice this year, pour a glass of cool Chardy and join us for a night of escapism, debauchery and some very rogue jingle bells.
In our review Alice described the show as “If you want a panto AND something different, this is definitely the show for you. Full of fun, a cheeky bum, plenty of banter and a naughty Santa. Grab your tickets.”
To learn more about the show we spoke with Stephen Hirst aka Bad Santa to learn more.
What can you tell me about the show and your role within it?
A Very Naughty Christmas is very much what it says on the packet. It's a raunchy, lewd, hilarious romp, taking traditions and your favourite carols and shining a light on them in a very naughty way. I play Santa, and as we have many audience members in for the first time, my job is to guide them in gently. Santa loves everyone, and everything, and he just wants to share that love with as many people as possible...
What first drew you to the part?
Nudity? I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the show from its conception, so the part has been built over the years to suit me!! Which is also the case for all our cast members. They bring their own special skills and talents and we adjust the show each year to suit them
How do you mentally and physically prepare for a run in a show?
I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and it seems every production requires a different approach. Staying fit and eating well remains a constant. Making sure you have time to rest is also key.
How much was the rehearsal period for the show and getting it up on its feet?
We had two weeks to put the show together! Which is a huge endeavour for the new cast members! I’m lucky having done the show so many times. I just turn up and try to crack up the rehearsal room with new jokes.
How much of yourself, if any, do you see in the role?
I mostly prefer to see other people in Santa.
Santa has been built around an extension of myself, so there’s a lot in there. It’s mostly about extending the naughty, crude and free love elements of my own personality. The character has also been a collaboration with our creative team over the years.
What are your favourite Christmas traditions?
Christmas in Australia is very different to the UK, and many of the traditions we use in the show, are specific to Australia. Receiving presents is my favourite Christmas tradition though! Oh! And spending time with my family and loved ones too.
What is your favourite Christmas joke?
Why is Santa so jolly? Because he knows where all the naughty boys and girls live.
What is your favourite (or top 3) Christmas films?
Die Hard, The Grinch, The Nightmare Before Christmas
When did you know that you wanted to perform?
I was eight years old when I first went to a drama class back in Gosford, Australia, and it was love at first sight. I have spent my career working in many different styles, from Improv to Shakespeare, Musical theatre to Film and TV. Each one brings its own joys and challenges.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
If you’re not in bed by midnight, go home.
What keeps you inspired?
The material and the people! Variety keeps things interesting and there are new challenges with every project.
What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
Chlamydia?
A Very Naughty Christmas is all about escaping for a smart 90 minutes to have a laugh and some naughty fun with your adult besties. We purposely stay well clear of trying to pass on any kind of message…
