Time to decide once and for all... cake or biscuit? Inspired by the 1991 tribunal which determined the true identity of a Jaffa Cake, multi award-winning family-friendly musical makers Gigglemug Theatre (Scouts! The Musical, RuneSical, Timpson: The Musical) return to the Fringe with their latest sell-out smash-hit comedy that really takes the biscuit (or cake?).
Ahead of the Fringe we caught with the Sam Cochrane to learn more about the show.
What can you tell me in your words about your show?
A Jaffa Cake Musical is a family-friendly comedy musical inspired by the infamous 1991 tribunal which determined once and for all whether a Jaffa Cake is a cake or a biscuit! The show sold out its entire run at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe and received over thirty 4 & 5 star reviews!
Where did the inspiration for this piece come from?
When I first heard about this bizarre slice of British history I knew it was just asking for a comedy musical. With our productions we often inject our own signature Gigglemug wackiness but we found that this story is crazy enough as it is - some of the things which went down in that courtroom you simply have to see to believe!
How have you approached developing the show?
Early last year we had workshop performances for the production as part of MTFest, the show then had its previews at The Other Palace before heading to Pleasance Courtyard for the whole Fringe! Following an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences & critics alike, it only made sense to bring the show back this year in a bigger venue for its final ever performances!
How would you describe the style of the show?
A feel-good slice of escapism that is perfect for the Fringe!
Can you describe the show in 3 words?
Cake or biscuit…?
How do you mentally and physically prepare for a run like the Fringe?
Normally we would have a very chilled couple months lead in but we’re currently touring Scouts! The Musical across England so it’s all go, go, go this Summer!
Away from your show, what are you most looking forward to about being in Edinburgh?
It’s got to be all of the delicious overpriced food stalls…
Are there any other shows at the Fringe you’d like to recommend?
Our very own Alex Prescot & Katie Pritchard are also performing in their solo shows which will be brilliant!
What was the first piece of theatre you saw which had a big impact on you?
Avenue Q was the show which made me fall in love with comedy musicals and want to give it a go myself!
What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
The world is a depressing place right now so we want people to leave with a warm fuzzy feeling, as our namesake ‘gigglemug’ means ‘someone who is always smiling’ we want to give our audiences a chance to do just that.
Where and when can people see your show?
We have previews at The Mission Theatre in Bath on Thurs 24th & Fri 25th July, then we’re at Pleasance Courtyard from 30th July - 25th August. This will be the last time we ever perform this show and, as it sold out its run last year, I’d recommend booking your tickets now! https://linktr.ee/TheGigglemug
