Alison Jackson’s Faking Famous: You Can Be A Celebrity Too Interview

In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.

In this interview, Alison Jackson discusses their show Alison Jackson’s Faking Famous: You Can Be A Celebrity Too.

Where did the inspiration come from?
I’ve always been fascinated by the great obsession with fame. We love it. We hate it. We queue for hours to see a wax figure of Ed Sheeran. Why? That’s what this show explores.

How did you develop the show?
With wigs, fake tan, and sheer delusion. Think immersive theatre meets high-glam satire  with a few existential crises thrown in. I basically took my photography and said, ‘What if this moved and shouted at people?’ And here we are.

How would you describe the style of the show?
Style? Darling, it’s a mash-up of Black Mirror, Spitting Image, and a particularly wild hen do. It’s absurd, camp, and occasionally illegal-looking in a good way.

How do you prepare for the Fringe?
How do I prepare for Fringe? I stretch my hamstrings. I hydrate. Then I wrangle five Trumps, two Kardashians and a rogue Boris Johnson into a van and pray for the best.”

3 words to describe the show?
Famous. Filthy. Fabulous.

Fringe recs & vibes?
After my show, go see SpitLip, Sh!t-Faced Shakespeare, or anything that’s in a pub. The weirder the flyer, the better the night. Fringe is a creative free-for-all support your fellow lunatics!

What do you hope people take away?
A selfie with someone they think is Beyoncé… and a slightly unsettled feeling about what’s real anymore. Also, a sore face from laughing.

Where & when is your show?
We’re at Assembly Checkpoint, Venue 322, 3 Bristo Place, from August 20 to 23, 7:40PM. Come get fake-famous, baby. Tickets on EdFringe and Assembly and if you spot our Trump wandering down the Royal Mile, send him back, please.
