In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.
In this interview, Georgie Banks discusses their show Frozen Love: A Buckingham Nicks Story.
What can you tell me in your words about your show?
Frozen Love is a dramatised true story of the Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s early career years before they joined Fleetwood Mac. We intertwine songs from the duos debut album Buckingham Nicks and discover how some of the famous Fleetwood Mac songs were written in that time. It’s funny, moving, cool, very 70s, fiery and witchy.
Where did the inspiration for this piece come from?
I have been a huge Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks fan for years and the idea came about from me filling Jake in on all the lore. We snowballed into the research and the show pretty much wrote itself. It is also the 50th Anniversary of Stevie and Lindsey joining Fleetwood Mac in 2025 so we thought it would be the perfect time to share it!
How have you approached developing the show?
It has been a long process of development. Jake and I first started writing the show 2.5 years ago in 2022. Since then it has been through too many drafts I’ve lost count, as every bit of new work does, but I think the main thing we’ve always come back to is portraying the truest version of their story as possible. All the plot points have been storied taken from interviews they’ve done, biographies they’ve been involved in writing and published journal entries, so we have always wanted to portray a story that conveys how they both saw and experienced it at the time. As they so brilliantly write what they know as well, the songs lent themselves to the story so well, the challenge was just settling on the final song list as there’s so many incredible ones to choose from!
How would you describe the style of the show?
I would say the show is very intimate in style. We wanted it to be a glimpse into the lives of two rock legends but before they had all of the fame and fortune. We wanted to show their relationship honestly for what it was, the good and the bad, which hopefully the audience will be able to relate to.
Can you describe the show in 3 words?
Moving, Inspiring, Nostalgic.
Can you tell me an interesting fact about the show?
The shows poster image, of Stevie and Lindsey was actually given to us by the original photographer Jimmy Wachtel to use for the show promotion. We find it very cool and get giddy about it still!
How do you mentally and physically prepare for a run like the Fringe?
This will actually be my first time at Edinburgh Fringe! I know! Jake and I have done Brighton and Camden fringe but are ready to face Edinburgh. The main thing we’re focussing on for this show is vocal health and making sure we can maintain that as its big sing for both of us. I fully believe the excitement and adrenaline of being there for the first time debuting a show is gonna carry us through.
Away from your show, what are you most looking forward to about being in Edinburgh?
We’ve got so many wonderful friends taking shows up that we cannot wait to see but also just exploring and seeing it all for the first time. All I’ve been told is amazing things about the vibes and the people supporting each other so cannot wait to experience that.
What is one hidden gem in Edinburgh that everyone should visit?
Ooooh. I’m not sure how hidden it is but I love Dean Village, it’s so beautiful!
Are there any other shows at the Fringe you’d like to recommend?
Drama Girls by She Speaks Productions, Can’t Talk Right Now: a new musical by the gorgeous Molly O’Gorman, Barden Party, Lost the Plot: An Improvised Musical. All of these shows are written by wonderful friends and would love for them to get lots of love at fringe!
What was the first piece of theatre you saw which had a big impact on you?
The first musical I remember seeing was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Palladium, I think I was about 6. I remember just being absolutely dumbstruck at the whole thing. That building is so special and having that experience so young definitely started my love of theatre.
What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
I hope that they leave being as die hard Stevie and Lindsey fans as I am, so I have someone to gush about them too haha. Truly, we hope that the audience learns something about them that perhaps they didn’t know, we hope they enjoy the music and uncover some new favourite songs and mainly we hope that they can relate to the story in their own ways.
Where and when can people see your show?
We are wrapping up our London previews on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th July at The Lion and Unicorn Theatre in Camden at 7:30pm. We will then be heading up to Edinburgh to perform at The Space at Surgeons Hall at 8:30pm from 1st - 16th August (with no show on 10th). Then hopefully we have some plans in the works for it to continue in some capacity in London after Edinburgh, so watch this space!
