Proust Effect - Eden Choi Edinburgh Fringe Interview

In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.

In this interview, Eden Choi discusses their show Proust Effect.

What can you tell me in your words about your show?
I am magician Eden Choi, a semi-finalist on Britain's Got Talent this year.
You can see my act live from this year's Britain's Got Talent Audition
And this show is a magic show that expresses the inspiration I received while performing around the world.
I created the culture, symbols and atmosphere of each country through performance
The audience will feel like they are really traveling to each country while watching my show
I will show you the future of magic of a new era
A truly fun and powerful new magic show will unfold.

Where did the inspiration for this piece come from?
The meaning of the Proust Effect is that when Proust tried to eat a madeleine, he remembered the madeleine his mother made for him when he was young. And so he named it the Proust Effect.

In other words, it is a phenomenon in which past memories come back through scents, sounds, and tastes.

When I perform around the world, memories of those countries accumulate inside me. And the atmosphere of that moment, the taste of the food, and the smells are all etched in my memory.

Those memories gave me a new lease of life. I will not only store the inspirations I received from countries around the world in my memories I want to share them with the audience through magic.

How have you approached developing the show?
I researched the music I heard when I visited that country, the scenery I saw, and the cultures that were famous in that country.

Each country has its own unique image.

I think those images are created from that country's traditions and culture.

So I looked into each country's culture and images and actually made those images into a performance.

When selecting music, I also used the music of that country and used music that could express that country.
I also created each part with the concept of a city or space that represents that country.

How would you describe the style of the show?
Most magic tricks create impossible situations. To do that, magician need a magic process. However, I created the show in the form of a performance.

So rather than explaining the situation. I show you instant magic tricks that you can see with your own eyes. It will be much faster and more enjoyable.

It is a magic show, but it is also like a dance show or a circus. It is a performance magic that pleases the eyes of the audience.

How did your time on BGT change your career?
I got love calls from all over the world. They asked me to perform in shows all over the world and on TV shows.

I think it was a big turning point in my life. Because it made my dream of traveling around the world and performing magic that I had dreamed of since I was young come true I think the most meaningful and happy memory of this year is BGT. And I want to make another best memory of this year at this Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Through BGT, I was able to show my magic to the British audience on TV. And thanks to BGT, I got a great opportunity to open a solo show in the UK
And this time, I was able to show my magic to the British audience live, not on TV.

How do you reflect on your time on the show and how much it has shaped you going forwards?
I learned so many things while preparing for this show
I learned about the culture of UK and Scotland while researching about the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

And I have only done solo performances in Korea, so it is an honor to do it in UK. Preparing for this show made me think about my dreams again, And I thought about what kind of magic I want to create again

Can you describe the show in 3 words?
magic, travel, world

How do you mentally and physically prepare for a run like the Fringe?
Before the show, I stay up all night in Korea every night preparing for the show.

I revise and upgrade every day for make the best show.
And I'm also preparing a lot to promote my show.
I'm preparing to promote my show through SNS. I'm also preparing for a busking show. You can see a preview of my show on the street.

I'm also very tired during the preparation process. But I'm excited and looking forward to the show at Fringe, so I'm happily preparing.

Away from your show, what are you most looking
forward to about being in Edinburgh?
First of all, I am most excited about busking. It is my first time busking on the streets of UK.

I am looking forward to the atmosphere and the audience that will come to see it.

Also, there are not many festivals in Korea. Especially, there are few festivals that show performances like this. However I am curious about and excited about the atmosphere of this festival where various performances and audiences from all over the world come.

Are there any other shows at the Fringe you’d like to recommend?
I haven't seen any other performances yet but I would like to recommend the performances of Asian performers who perform at the same theater [WU]. Theater WU will feature a variety of performances laser shows, comedy , singers , circus , and magic.

What was the first piece of theatre you saw which had a big impact on you?
This is Shin lim's magic show in Las Vegas. I lived in Las Vegas for about a month. I got a lot of inspiration from magic at that time. There are some of the best magic shows in the world there. Shin Lim's magic show, David Copperfield's magic show, etc.
I dreamed while watching the performances there. And one of my acts inspired by Las Vegas became the beginning of my Proust Effect that I will do at the Edinburgh Fringe this time.

What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
I want the audience to feel like they are really traveling around the world while watching my performance.
I want to give the audience the happiness that travel gives through my performance.

And I hope that my performance can inspire someone just like I was inspired by watching other performances.
