In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.
In this interview, The Red Kitchen Collection discuss their show Tall Tails.
What can you tell me in your words about your show?
Our show is silly, quick witted, relatable, and ultra goofy. It’s the kind of show we would have so much fun watching and it’s been even more fun writing and performing.

Where did the inspiration for this piece come from?
The inspiration for our show is honestly each other. We are a group of a bodacious girlfriends and feel very privileged for the bond we all share and wanted to embody it in our show. We also all our chronic people pleasers, feeling both bemused and frustrated and wanted to create a parody narrative that was both relatable and self-healing. We also love mermaids. Who doesn’t?

How have you approached developing the show?
Our approach to developing the show has been highly collaborative. We created a mash up of what we refer to as a “Frankenstein” of all our writing and from there have spent countless hours sitting around the red kitchen brainstorming, combing through, adding more, and of course, giggles o’plenty! Our core theme throughout has been clear communication, vulnerability, what makes us laugh, and love.

How would you describe the style of the show?
The style of our show is campy and light-hearted with underlying deeper themes of self-worth, social anxiety, and friendship. In humor and pace, we took a lot of inspiration from some of our favorite TV shows like “Sex and the City”, “SpongeBob Square Pants” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
Can you describe the show in 3 words?
Clam-tastic, porpoise-ful, em-ocean-al
Can you tell me an interesting fact about the show?
An interesting fact about the show is that collectively we have eaten 132 scoops of ice cream since we started writing the show. All from the same ice cream shop. The employees are scared of us and hard to read.
How do you mentally and physically prepare for a run like the Fringe?
We physically and mentally prepare for a show at fringe by talking about our feelings a lot and loading up on hot fudge brownie sundaes. To quote the cinema classic Sleepover, “Brownies are the most important food group!”
Away from your show, what are you most looking forward to about being in Edinburgh?
Apart from our show, we are most looking forward to exploring Edinburgh, getting to see other shows at Fringe, and being apart of the vibrant community that awaits us there!
What is one hidden gem in Edinburgh that everyone should visit?
One hidden gem at Edinburgh that people should visit is definitely ceilidh dancing at Stromash on Wednesday nights!
Are there any other shows at the Fringe you’d like to recommend?
Another show to see at Fringe is Mat Wills: My Wife Took My Dad to a Brothel (I drove). We sat next to Mat on the train up and he’s lovely. Another one is#40andsingle- Secrets to Finding Love! who is also performing at theSpace!
What was the first piece of theatre you saw which had a big impact on you?
We are all originally from the US, all grew up seeing Broadway shows. A couple of our most impactful would be A Chorus Line and Wicked
What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
We hope audience members walk away from our show feeling understood and empathized with and hopefully their faces a little sore from laughing! It’s hard work constantly feeling everyone’s feelings! We see you girl! We also want to make people laugh and encourage the “HahaHeeHee’s”
Where and when can people see your show?
You can see our show at theSpace @ Surgeons’ Hall, August 1-9 at 7:45 pm! We can’t wait to see you there!
