In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.
In this interview, Joel Benedict chats about I Wish My Life Were A Musical.
What can you tell me in your words about your show?
Hello! The show is a behind the curtain look into the world of musical theatre - everything from auditioning to audiences, standbys to swings, trials to tribulations, preparation to performances, and All That Jazz!

How would you describe the style of the show?
A witty and wordy celebration of musical theatre in Alexander Bermange’s unique style with musical references aplenty! And some Wickedly talented performances, of course…

Can you describe the show in 3 words?
Frenetic, funny, fabulous!
How do you mentally and physically prepare for a run like the Fringe?
In the show I have a song called Only Then Can I Truly Perform which is about exactly that - how a performer prepares - so you’ll just have to come and see the show and find out…
Away from your show, what are you most looking forward to about being in Edinburgh?
It’s a Wonderful Town! I actually trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow and have performed at the Fringe several times, so I’m looking forward to reconnecting with friends and visiting places I used to frequent! And seeing some fantastic theatre, of course!
What is one hidden gem in Edinburgh that everyone should visit?
Wings on Old Fishmarket Close! The best wings you’ll ever have, with loads of sauce flavours to choose from, great beer, and a cool nerdy vibe. I’ve actually turned veggie since the last time I was here, so I’m on the cauli wings now, but the fact it’s still my recommendation should tell you how good it is - God that’s good!
Are there any other shows at the Fringe you’d like to recommend?
My friend Ellie is bringing her new one person show A Sudden, Disturbing To Do List! It’s on at Mint Studio at Greenside @ George Street from the 11th-23rd Aug (not 17th) - I can’t wait to see it!
What was the first piece of theatre you saw which had a big impact on you?
A touring theatre company called Oddsocks who mainly do hilarious and brilliant outdoor Shakespeare productions. I saw them every year as a child (and still try to!) and they really informed my style of performance and humour. I would love to perform with them at some point in my career! I’ll have to Brush Up my Shakespeare…
What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing the show?
Toe tapping tunes stuck in their heads, and a Memory of witty words and passionate performers!
Where and when can people see your show?
5:45pm every day (except Wednesdays!) until our last show on the 24th August at the Gilded Balloon at the Museum. So Come From Away and have Some Enchanted Evening - it’ll be Wicked!
