Jeremy Lloyd Thomas - The Classic Thriller Season Interview

Fatal fun and murderous twists aplenty as The Colin McIntyre Classic Thriller Season returns to Nottingham.

Tabs Productions and the Theatre Royal, Nottingham are returning of The Colin McIntyre Classic Thriller Season 2025 this August.

Now in its 38th season, the Theatre Royal’s much-loved repertory season of comedy murder mysteries and classic psychological thrillers opens on Tuesday 12 August and runs for three weeks until Saturday 30 August.

In the forthcoming 2025 season, Jeremy Lloyd Thomas will be playing the role of Enzo Garibaldi in Death by Fatal Murder (12-16 Aug), and Porter Milgrim in Deathtrap (19-23 Aug).

We caught up with Jeremy ahead of performances.

What can you tell me about the play/s you are performing in this year?
I’m performing in two plays this year, Death By Fatal Murder by Peter Gordon, which is a comedy spoof of the Agatha Christie genre and Deathtrap by Ira Levin, a tense and clever thriller full of plot twists and double crosses.

How does your character fit into the play?
In Death By Fatal Murder my character is one of sundry suspicious guests with secrets to hide at an old country house where a murder takes place. What could go wrong?
In Deathtrap I play an eagle-eyed attorney who notices everything that goes on and sows the seeds of doubt in the minds of the other characters.

How do you approach building your version of the character?
The script usually gives you all you need. All the clues are there but not always in the scenes you’re in. It’s important to listen to what other characters say about your character when your character is not there. Then there are the given facts such as age, occupation, marital status etc. most importantly for me is to find the truth in my characters responses and actions and not to expect to discover everything straight away. Trust the process of rehearsal. Play, discover and be open to change and listen.

Why do you think these stories continue to delight audiences?
Everyone loves a good thriller or murder mystery, it’s the thrill of trying to work it out yourself and the kudos if you get it right. I think audiences love to be scared and shocked. If something makes an audience jump or gasp it’s quite often followed by a laugh.

How would you describe the season in 3 words?
Jolly good fun!

What was the first piece of theatre which had a big impact on you?
A Chorus Line in The West End in 1979, it was the first big musical show I had seen (apart from films) and I was entranced. It was so exciting, I hadn’t seen much theatre up until then and I’ve never forgotten how it made me feel, the fact it was a show about show business made it all the more poignant. Apart from that the biggest influence on me was The Sound Of Music, I adore that film. I wanted to be a Von Trapp child so badly!

What gives you inspiration?
For the last 21 years I have worked as a director and teacher at The Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and I can unequivocally state that what gives me inspiration are the wonderful, talented, hardworking and dedicated students that I have had the joy, pleasure and privilege of working with there.

What do you hope an audience member takes away from seeing these plays?
An inspiration and desire to see more theatre. It’s easy to forget how exciting it can be, especially when it’s your job.
