From the team who brought you the hit show That’ll Be The Day, comes a brand new Christmas show!
Nothing says Christmas quite like That’ll Be Christmas!
This year is extra special as the cast of That’ll Be The Day celebrates their 40-Year Anniversary. Packed with your all-time favourite Christmas classics, laugh-out-loud comedy sketches, and heart-warming festive cheer, this is the perfect family night out.
We caught up with creator and star Trevor Payne to learn more about the show.
What can you tell us about That’ll Be Christmas?
That’ll Be Christmas is similar to the regular show given that we change the production every year. We aim to add the same ingredients of some impersonations and comedy, traditional Christmas songs and hits of Christmas’ past. That package delights our audience.

How does the show fit into the world of That’ll Be The Day?
The show is tweaked to accommodate the seasonal period. The audience leaves the show satisfied and ready in the mood for Christmas. Every show we do has the same atmosphere as Christmas eve.

How do you reflect on the journey of That’ll Be The Day to this point?
I feel very thankful. The simple formula that we adopted in the early days, a chronological history of music, interspersed with the pop and impressions, has got us to where we are now.

How do you approach keeping things fresh for a new tour?
I do a lot of research into things connected with Christmas and songs that were hits over Christmas’ past. We would never play the same Christmas show twice, we would always try and think of something innovative for the new production. The aim is to have the audience feel better coming out the theatre than when they came in.

With so much music to choose from, how do you decide what does and what doesn’t make it into the show?
The various ingredients have to fit together in the production. I try hard each year not to repeat things that we’ve done before. I’m always looking for a new angle, but still aware that we must play the big traditional Christmas pop hits. The comedy pieces are the icing on the Christmas cake.

How do you mentally and physically prepare for a show?
Our cast and crew are all of the same mindset. The whole point of our day is the 3 hours that we are on stage, so we must make those 3 hours work. Every audience has paid their money and expects a good quality show and it’s our duty as the performers to give them that quality on stage.

What keeps you inspired?
I like what I do. I’m completely immersed in pop music and how to present it on stage. I never want to show to be substanding, for me it’s 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration – I work hard to be inventive and make that work.

What are your favourite Christmas traditions?
It’s been a habit of mine to spend Christmas somewhere different every year, including Scotland, New York, Norway, Wales, Spain and Portugal. However, I’m breaking the tradition this year and spending it with my daughter and grandchildren in London.

What do you hope someone takes away from seeing That’ll Be Christmas?
Feeling of well-being. We hope that they come ready for what should be a very happy time of year. We put them in the mood for Christmas so that they come out of the show feeling Christmasy.
