Now Alex returns to Leicester for the Leicester Comedy Festival, where he performs both his shows Cosy and his latest work-in-progress show Game Boy. We sat down with Alex to learn more about both shows.

What can you tell us about your forthcoming show, Cosy?
I’m super excited to be bringing my debut musical comedy hour to Leicester as the first stop on my UK tour! It’s a warm hug of a show about my double act partner who left me for Australia (don’t worry I’m definitely over it!!), and blends musical comedy, crowd work and improvised songs.

How do you approach writing and building a new show?
I worked with my brilliant director Ben Target to weave the songs and story together into a structure which had enough flexibility to incorporate lots of improv elements.

This time last year I brought my first work-in-progress of ‘Cosy’ to Leicester, so it’s a lovely full circle moment to bring the finalised show back to the festival this year!

You are described as 'the comedy equivalent of sunshine'. How important is it for you to simply spread some joy?
I think that everyone has a default mode on stage, a version of themselves where they feel the most comfortable, and for me that’s high energy, chatting to the audience, and celebrating them throughout.

I think it’s so important to properly value the people that come out to see you perform - it’s not like you can do it without them!

You are also bringing your latest work-in-progress show, Game Boy, to the Leicester Comedy Festival. What is the inspiration behind this show?
I noticed I love playing games with the audience, so I thought 'what if I had a whole show of doing that?'. It’s actually now also got stories about the games I loved growing up and about my brother (who’s a hardcore gamer!).

It’s nice to be bringing both something at the very beginning of its life and something finished to the festival - come to both to compare and contrast!

How would you describe your comedy style for anyone unaware of your work?
I’m super upbeat and positive and aim to make musical comedy shows where everyone can get involved and be celebrated for that.

Also when I improvise I’ve been described as ‘quick-witted’, but obviously I would never say that about myself as that’s far too arrogant!

How do you physically and mentally get into the head space for a show?
I do vocal and improvised rap warm ups (cringe but true!).

Then, in the 5 minutes before the show, I always remind myself that there’s nothing I can do now and my job is to concentrate on having as much fun with that specific audience - the more I concentrate on them, the better.

Who are your own comedy heroes?
Bo Burnham, Catherine Cohen, Jordan Brookes, Nina Conti and countless acts who come out of nowhere and have changed what I thought was possible to do on stage.

How do you reflect on your career and journey so far and how does that drive you forwards?
I’d say it’s going in the right direction?

This is my first UK tour so I’m excited about that, but I don’t like to look too far ahead. As long as every year I feel like I’m making progress in some way, that’s good enough for me.

I think that’s also what keeps me going - finding different ways to progress as a comic year on year.

What keeps you inspired?
Constantly trying to improve what I do, and the amazing and surprising interactions I have with audience members.

Where can readers see the show and follow your journey beyond?
I’m bringing my full musical comedy debut ‘Cosy’ to Tønne Bar on Saturday 7th February at 19:00, and then my work-in-progress show ‘Game Boy’ to the Globe on Saturday 14th February at 16:30. And you can follow me on social media @alexpcomedy - thanks!
