1518: The Dancing Plague - Hannah Ponturo Edinburgh Fringe Interview

In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe 2026 interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.

In this interview, we speak with Hannah Ponturo, the playwright behind 1518: The Dancing Plague, to learn more about their show.

What can you tell me about your show?
1518: The Dancing Plague is a hilarious romp through one of history's most kookoo-bananas (ridiculous) events. The play centers around a queer love story that tries to flourish around the exploding illness.

How would you describe the style of your show to anyone who has never seen you before?
It's a wacky satire that's thoroughly researched but bedazzled with gay love and LOTS of laughter.

What was the lightbulb moment that led to the creation of this piece?
The moment I heard about the dancing plague I knew that it was a play waiting to be written. I just had to figure out how.

What makes 2026 the perfect year for this specific story or performance?
I have been waiting for other people to produce my work and this year I just decided to gather a group of talented artists and do it ourselves.

How will you mentally and physically prepare for a run at the Fringe?
I have no expectations and I am just excited to be with other theatermakers and have fun. Luckily, I get to sit back and watch but I hope my actors do get a lot of rest.

If you couldn’t use a flyer to attract audiences, what ridiculous object would you hand out to people to get them into your show?
A plague doctor mask.

What is the one item in your Fringe Survival Kit that you can’t live without this month?
Advil!

What would you deem as success at the end of the Fringe?
To overhear a stranger talking about our work.

Other than your own show, are there any other shows you would recommend at the Fringe this year?
(No) Refunds!

What is one Edinburgh spot that you would recommend people to visit when they're not watching performances?
The castle!

Can you describe the show in 5 words?
Dancing. Death. Lesbians. That's three.

What keeps you inspired?
My writer's group! We have been meeting every Tuesday at 8pm since 2021.

What would you hope someone takes away from seeing the show?
That mental health is as important as physical health.

When and where can people see the show?
theSpace Triplex Studio. August 24-29 at 9pm.
