Highly Suspect, a theatre outfit based in Cumbria, have returned to the Fringe this year with a dual offering of interactive murder mysteries: Knives In and ABBAsolute Murder. Pitching the latter around the fictional Continental Song Contest, complete with past winners "BABA", the company delivers an exceptionally well-crafted experience grounded in sharp detail and brilliant, immersive audience interaction.
Upon entering Theatre 1 at theSpace @ Surgeons’ Hall, guests are invited to join the live broadcast of this year's song contest. Punny characters like host Hugh Eurovision and international contestants Hans Oopintheair, Hoda Layheihoo, and Wyatt Mencantrap mingle with the crowd, building anticipation for a featured performance by half of pop group BABA. However, the show comes to a sudden halt when the singers are found dead, turning the audience from spectators into investigators tasked with catching the killer.
Highly Suspect’s Fringe expertise shines through in their vibrant character work and razor-sharp audience engagement. ABBAsolute Murder is clearly a labour of love, packed with pun-filled comedy, guided plot clues, and an extensive activity pack. The 1-hour-and-5-minute show flies past, but it almost suffers from its own ambition. The clue packs are so rich and complex that the runtime feels a bit too tight to digest everything. It’s a brilliantly acted, incredibly creative concept that simply needs a little longer to allow you to experience everything in full.
Need a fun, fully interactive show for your Fringe lineup? ABBAsolute Murder is an absolute blast for mystery lovers and immersive theatre fans alike. It's not often you'll get to flex that you helped solve a murder at the Edinburgh Fringe.
