In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe 2026 interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.
In this interview, we speak with the team behind Broke and Fabulous in the 21st Century.
What can you tell me about your show?
It’s a raucous, raunchy riotous love letter to London that is inspired by the friendships that make it so special to me. I just want it to be a side splitting good time for the audience with some great characters that they can fall in love with and see a bit of themselves in.
How would you describe the style of your show to anyone who has never seen you before?
It’s a millennial dramedy. Imagine if Gimme Gimme and Queer as Folk had a baby and the doting godmother of that baby was absolutely fabulous.
What was the lightbulb moment that led to the creation of this piece?
It wasn’t so much a lightbulb per say but this atom bomb that I was straddling that went off. I needed to earn a Global Talent Visa to stay in the country. I guess the lightbulb moment was when one of my closest mentors told me to write what you know and that’s what I did. I also knew the space and the audience I was writing for, with a month to write it and from this pool of chaotic fire rose a phoenix that carried these wonderful characters and story to the stage. It’s amazing what a deadline and some high stakes can do for a neurodivergent mind.
What makes 2026 the perfect year for this specific story or performance?
A lot of what makes this play what it is, is the fact that its very much set in the present, about the universal millennial struggle in our professional and personal life. I hope, Broke & Fabulous in the 21st century is like a catharsis for some of those in the audience going through the same thing. No matter what generation you are from, I think anybody can understand and resonate with the stories told in this show.
How will you mentally and physically prepare for a run at the Fringe?
Other than being born ready, and the knowledge of having the best team behind me, I tend to just make sure in the pre-show chaos we find quiet time for ourselves. Up in Edinburgh, for me, usually it’s getting in a morning swim before call time.
If you couldn’t use a flyer to attract audiences, what ridiculous object would you hand out to people to get them into your show?
A bottle of ice cold Chablis and some poppers.
What is the one item in your Fringe Survival Kit that you can’t live without this month?
My Assistant Director/therapy human.
What would you deem as success at the end of the Fringe?
Honestly, to have had the warmest of Fringe receptions, to have kept audiences in stitches and let’s face it; this play was always been a love letter to London, so if we could bring Broke & Fabulous home, bigger and better than ever with a great theatre like SoHo or The Bush, you wouldn’t get the smile off my face till Christmas.
Other than your own show, are there any other shows you would recommend at the Fringe this year?
Yes! Would love to recommend Women of Will at Summer Hall, Desperate Wee Gay boy at the Underbelly, and honestly the Gilded Balloon this year has such amazing lineups you're not going to be short of choice.
What is one Edinburgh spot that you would recommend people to visit when they’re not watching performances?
San Chuan Edinburgh - https://share.google/SaHVnXPALQtf3ZVnj
Can you describe the show in five words?
Silly, sexy, high energy and f***ing fabulous!
What keeps you inspired?
Honestly, I’m a guy who always feels inspired, I haven’t found a way to shut it off yet.
What would you hope someone takes away from seeing the show?
Split sides from laughing, red eyes from crying and some solace in knowing that we are all in this crazy race together.
When and where can people see the show?
The Gilded Balloon, the Dram at Patterhouse 2:20 PM everyday starting August 5 (no show August 17th), having a drink before is encouraged because this show will make you want to knock one back (actually maybe a couple).
