Little Pink Dress is a poignant coming-of-age and coming-out musical performance by singer-songwriter Joey Jennings.
Growing up with a supportive single mother who encouraged him to express himself freely, Jennings knew from an early age that he was gay and that he loved dressing up in his mother’s clothes.

Jennings intertwines his life story with an impressive range of original music. Given the sheer quality of his vocals and stage presence in this show, it is genuinely surprising he hasn’t landed more major acting roles.
Jennings moves effortlessly between emotional beats, shifting the mood seamlessly through each musical number. His own compositions mix the more heartfelt ones and the more comedic and edgy. Undoubtedly, Jennings has a cracking country sound, but it’s quite relentless and makes the run time feel a little longer than it should. There are a couple of real standout moments, including a song that brilliantly parodies the signs of the zodiac, and another that beautifully uses sign language as Jennings connects with his mother.
Jennings does admirably to battle against other noise from above, which could easily have derailed the performance, but he battled on.

With a little more work, Jennings may have mined gold; at the minute it feels a little lost in what it wants the message to be. I’d have loved to have seen more around the pink dress and a bit more depth around it. An enjoyable show with a talented performer.
