Lizzie Bean: Phuckets and Rainbows - Post-Edinburgh Fringe Interview

In a new series of interviews, we are going to be reflecting on this years Edinburgh Fringe with artists and creatives who performed at the festival to learn how the festival went and to find out more about their work.

In this interview, we speak with Lizzie Bean reflecting on the run of Phuckets and Rainbows.

With the run in Edinburgh now complete, how do you reflect on the time at the Fringe?
It was a mostly. A joy!!! So many beautiful souls there! Magic, colourful, human people. All with a dream and all with a story to tell!

It was also… a bit heart breaking…

Streets lined with hope and optimism, music and magic… and quietly strewn with heartache, litter and crumpled dreams.

What is the biggest lesson you learned during the run in Edinburgh?
To be kind!! It’s always the same lesson! To be honest. Kind to myself and kind to the people I met! It meant I made a zillion light bouncing  connections with humans of all ages!! Don’t just keep the warmth for the people who you want to impress!!! Keep it for everyone!

How did the reality of your run compare to what you envisioned during rehearsals?
It was pretty much as I expected! Even though I didn't really have any idea what to expect! Work that one out! 😂

What was the biggest surprise—positive or negative—once you actually got in front of Fringe audiences?
How supportive they can be! What impact they can have!!! And that silence doesn’t mean they hate the show…

One night my music didn’t work… so I sang without…. And about 2 lines in… a beautiful voice joined me… and we sang the rest of the song as a team! That’s the sort of wonder you can’t bottle!! Spontaneous love, kindness and human connection!

Was there a specific moment on or off stage that defined the Edinburgh experience for you this year?
I think it was a feeling! Of “I’ve got your back” the beautiful Greenside staff who kept saying you’ve got this Lizzie! And fellow performer Jackie… who said just “don’t be shit”

Humans…. Scaffolding… not competing but being!

How did you manage the physical and mental stamina required to perform daily in that high-density environment?
I was shit at doing anything other than a bit of flyering, walking, and doing my show Phuckets and Rainbows! I managed by not over extending myself… and hugs, laughter and connection just because was a tonic too!

How did you handle reviews and word-of-mouth chatter while still having to go out and perform every night?
My reviews were all a bit wonderful! So they just kept me going!! So easy to fall over when you hear someone say they thought your show was pants! But I didn’t hear that…. So dare I believe!! It’s actually a bit brilliant!

Did any audience reactions or feedback lead to real-time tweaks in the script or performance?
Yes! I’ve def polished my show! It loops better, the story hooks, and I do have to remember to fold my costumes!! 😂

What is one piece of advice you would give to anyone who would want to take a show to the 2027 Ed Fringe?
Make the win… getting there… ✨
