In a series of interviews, we are chatting to artists involved with the 2024 Wandsworth Fringe. The Fringe Festival runs from 7th until 23rd June.
In this interview, we chat with Group 64 Theatre for Young People about Spreading the Joy which plays on 8th June at a variety of locations in Wandsworth.
Where did your arts career begin?
I started acting in a Youth Theatre, when I was 14 years old, and then did a theatre degree where I got a chance to direct - which I loved. Once I finished University, I volunteered at Chickenshed Theatre Company and this really cemented my love for children and young people's theatre.
Spreading the Joy is a show for 3 to 8 year olds about the alien Wendell's journey through space as they search for their lost moon rocks journey. We went into 4 different primary schools in Wandsworth and ran workshops to get the ideas for the characters, locations and plot ideas (children always have much better ideas than grown-ups!)
Where did the idea for the show come from?
Since the Covid Pandemic there has been a huge increase in mental health issues in children and young people. At Group 64 we put mental health at the heart of all our work, so we wanted to bring this to as many local young children as possible. Due to the generous funding from WAF we are able to offer the show for free.
How do you prepare for a performance?
We do lots of fun, crazy and silly warm ups!
What is the message of your show?
That you should celebrate being you, be kind to each other, be brave and give it a go and it's okay to worry, everyone has worries.

A chocolate chip cookie, calm on the outside but lots of fun inside.
