Jose Navarro Theatre - Ritual Scissors Dance - Wandsworth Fringe Interview

In a series of interviews, we are chatting to artists involved with the 2024 Wandsworth Fringe. The Fringe Festival runs from 7th until 23rd June.

In this interview, we chat with Jose Navarro Theatre about Ritual Scissors Dance which runs at Holy Trinity Church in Roehampton on 15th and 16th June.

Where did your arts career begin?

"Jose Navarro Theatre" began in Peru as a multidisciplinary performing arts company, to work the promotion of mime, puppetry, music, dance. Most of the time as a freelance artist, but gradually involving collaboration with other artists to develop the devised performances based on traditions and heritage. 2

What can you tell me about your show?

"Ritual Scissors Dance" is based on a dance form of the same name and is considered intangible with the Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. We bring this Andean highland dance from Peru, together with the mix of puppetry and traditional music for the audiences’ enjoyment and give them an insight into this tradition. The piece has been presented in various formats at many international festivals, and won prizes in China, Thailand, Kazakhstan, USA, Russia, and other places. This time involves other performers based in London.

Where did the idea for the show come from?

The inspiration came from the dance itself, and we made an adaptation with various puppet techniques, to mix these two ancient art forms.

How do you prepare for a performance?

Rehearsals for the dance and puppetry and together with the whole team that we will perform on this exciting Arts Fringe programme.

What is the message of your show?

Keep and value your traditions, your heritage and embrace changes, welcome new ideas and above all share your culture.

If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?

Cheese biscuits, to add more...

Can you describe the show in three words?

World Ritual Dance
