Rodreguez King-Dorset - The Windrush Secret Interview

The Windrush Secret by Rodreguez King-Dorset, set in 2018, is about a young white far-right racist party leader, a black Caribbean diplomat and a white Oxford educated Home Office government official who are giving speeches on the same day, at different times, in separate locations about a million people who migrated from the Caribbean to Britain between 1948 and 1973 (The Windrush Generation), and the British political scandal which began in 2018.

One of them has a dark secret that he struggles to come to terms with during his fiery speech – it will change his life forever!

Ahead of the show playing on tour we chatted to
Rodreguez King-Dorset to learn more about the piece.

Windrush Secret, set in 2018, is about a young white far-right racist party leader, a black Caribbean diplomat and an Oxford educated Home Office government official who are giving speeches on the same day, at different times, in separate locations about a million people who migrated from the Caribbean to Britain between 1948 and 1973 ( Windrush Generation), and the British political scandal which began in 2018. One of them has a dark secret that he struggles to come to terms with during his fiery speech – it will change his life forever!

At the beginning of Windrush Secret  all three characters believe that their best characteristics are their good names and the respect and integrity associated with their names. Marcus as a champion for ‘Black Lives Matter’ and the ‘Windrush Scandal’, Trevor as a white British patriot fighting against the influx of black Caribbean immigrants in England and finally Charles and his crusade within the Home Office to create and deliver boarder control policies to restrict black Caribbean immigrants and to reach the government immigration deportation targets. However, it is only at the end of the play when we realise that all three of them are tormented individuals.

Having said all that - I have to reveal a secret of my own ! The play is not really about Trevor , Marcus or Charles, as individuals- it’s about them as humans and our human condition and how all humans are fallible.

The Windrush scandal continues to throw up many troubling issues between government civil servants and the individual Windrush generation victims; the lack of accountability with how long it still takes civil servants to deal with the backlog of cases that have not been resolved for those affected by the Windrush scandal.

When all those cases have been settled, I will not perform the play in the UK again!
