White Lies centres around a cold case: Bowan Butler, who went missing ten years ago, has now resurfaced.
The play appears to be a murder mystery of just that, and it IS. But also, it isn't...
We follow Maria, who was raised in this non-named Deep South town, but has now become an FBI agent and is sent back to investigate this cold case. Using what should be the main plot of White Lies (the murder mystery), the writing twists this into the SUBplot.
As the story moves along, it becomes what is really, a delightful coming of age drama.
Through various subtle but cleverly placed time hops, we visit Maria's youth, and in that, we gain all the information we need about Bowan, the 'victim', his victims and ergo, the suspects.
There is something within the story telling that I loved but unfortunately can't divulge without a major spoiler, and it's so annoying that I can't, as it's sneaky, clever and a very interesting take on a murder-mystery.
I must confess I was drawn into this piece from the opening scene. Maria's father returns home from the Vietnam War and is greeted by his daughter. The dialogue in this scene was excellent, as is the dialogue throughout this whole play. Nothing is used as a filler, nothing is unimportant, and at times, nothing is what is seems.
The cast of Early Doors Productions were more or less perfect with their Southern State drawl.
The chemistry between Maria and Deputy Lions was excellent, adding yet another dimension to this piece of theatre. The heat of the room ironically helped to place you somewhere in the Deep South.
My few gripes were silly things. I didn't believe the smoking of the cigar, nor his invisible lighter, a few actors could've been louder, but otherwise a really good piece of theatre.
A truly engaging show.
Well worth catching.
