In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe 2026 interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.
In this interview, we speak with Dede Lovejoy about his show Shamanic: A Spiritual Traumedy!
What can you tell me about your show?
Shamaniac A Spiritual Traumedy emerged as I was recovering from a freak elevator accident where I nearly lost my hand—part memoir, part cautionary tale, and 100% true. Massive heartbreak destroyed me. Accidents crippled me—my desire to integrate spiritually, mentally, and physically led to me to non-traditional healing practices, and ultimately a surprising, revelatory new self, new beliefs, and a new body.
Shamaniac is a very raw look at my bizarre journey, warts and all. I hope people see themselves and identify. I want to share the experience authentically—we all break our hearts, our bodies—reintegrating the mind/body/spirit connection is paramount to our survival. I shine a light on my recovery experience to hopefully help and inspire.
How would you describe the style of your show to anyone who has never seen you before?
Riveting, relatable, FUNNY and fast paced…
What was the lightbulb moment that led to the creation of this piece?
I came to the fringe as an audience member last year and I thought: I NEED TO BRING A PIECE HERE NEXT YEAR. So I am!

What makes 2026 the perfect year for this specific story or performance?
It is the year of awakenings—especially for women—and shifting our consciousness towards our connection and humanity—it is the year of upgrading our awareness and the collective consciousness.
How will you mentally and physically prepare for a run at the Fringe?
I am performing in two shows at Greenside (my solo play SHAMANIAC A Spiritual Traumedy as well as The Misfortunes of a Spy and her Mystic so I am doing lots of self care and stamina building lol!

If you couldn’t use a flyer to attract audiences, what ridiculous object would you hand out to people to get them into your show?
A Gong, a drum and a rattle.
What is the one item in your Fringe Survival Kit that you can’t live without at the Fringe?
An all access Lanyard.
What would you deem as success at the end of the Fringe?
A sold out run, a cool review quote and at least one person per show giving themselves FULL permission to listen to that inner voice.

What would you hope someone takes away from seeing the show?
That it is essential to follow your heart--That they are not alone, that we are all connected, and tending to your spiritual life will inspire next level experience!
