Lil Wenker: Boyking - Edinburgh Fringe Interview

In our ongoing Edinburgh Fringe 2026 interview series, we are speaking to artists and creatives who are bringing their shows to the Scottish capital this summer.

In this interview, we speak with Lil Wenker about her show Boyking.

What is Boy King?
Following the massive success of her hit western-themed debut Bangtail — which toured five countries and ran at Soho Theatre — Wenker returns with a completely different tonal experiment [00:25, 09:28]. Boy King is described as an "evil clown musical" about an ambitious 8-year-old boy who wants nothing more than to become king [00:08].

From Shy Kid to French Clown School
Wenker's journey to professional clowning was far from conventional [02:22]:

Early Days: Started out in local community theater in Minnesota as a deeply shy child trying to gain confidence [02:29].

The Pivot: Originally planning to become a lawyer or journalist, she saved money working three jobs and enrolled in the world-famous École Philippe Gaulier clown school in France at age 20 [02:59].

The Epiphany: Seeing adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s wholeheartedly pursuing performance inspired her to commit to art full-time [03:22].

"Clowning is the opposite of getting good grades — it's about failure, being stupid, and messing up. That helped me so much as a person." Lil Wenker [04:34]

Why 2026 is the Year for Boy King
The show explores themes of authority and ego, tapping into the collective anxiety surrounding power dynamics in modern society [05:50]. Whether it's global politics or everyday clashes on public transport, Boy King tackles the struggle to be taken seriously through the chaotic lens of an entitled 8-year-old tyrant [05:58].

Fringe Survival Essentials
Prop Highlight: Walking around with a specially commissioned, body-sized giant crown [07:54].
Good Luck Charm: A mini "The World" tarot card gifted by comedian Cerys Bradley, reminding her to stay present [08:21].
Edinburgh Food Recommendation: Grab a giant focaccia sandwich at Alby's to fuel up after a high-energy show [10:30].
