Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue - Edinburgh Fringe Review

If you’re looking for highbrow experimental theatre, keep walking past theSpace @ Niddry Street. But if you want pure, unabashed Fringe chaos powered by 90s nostalgia, neon spandex, and larger-than-life fun, then Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue delivers in spades.

A loving, absurdly sharp spoof of iconic 1990s beach-drama culture, Spraywatch follows a ragtag team of sun-drenched lifeguards who treat every minor beach incident like a high-stakes action thriller. Complete with dramatic slow-motion running on a budget, dramatic pauses, and ridiculous musical numbers, the show leans heavily into its low-budget camp charm. Whilst it is very cheesy, it never strays into being too far or too outrageous; it treads the line perfectly.

The show follows a bubbly Santa Monica lifeguard (Izabella Webb) who gets sacked from her job and ends up leaving sunny California to Spray, described as a shithole of a British coastal town. She sets out to save the local beach scene and shock a jaded team of lifeguards back to life.

Webb shines as the quintessential California lifeguard, bringing depth, sincerity, and pure heart to a role that could easily fall into bimbo stereotypes. Anchoring a talented ensemble alongside Abbie Ashall, Jamie Knapper, Ant McGinley, and Natalie Hayes. The 5 cast members all excel in their delivery.

Giving each lifeguard their own lead musical number is a brilliant touch—highlighting individual vocal talents while enriching the world of Spray. There are so many joyous numbers littered throughout. Ant McGinley's number about his fear of crabs had me howling, whilst Jamie Knapper's fuck off song came out of nowhere and added edge to the performance and created the supervillain of the piece. 

Clever use of props and the stage space helps in bringing Spray to life. There's great humour watching characters open invisible doors. 

Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue captures the joyful, lighthearted spirit that makes seeing theatre at Edinburgh Fringe so special. It's ridiculous, high-energy fun that never takes itself too seriously whilst still delivering a compelling story. Fabulous good fun that'll give you a pep in your step.
