(No) Refunds is an absolute masterclass in interactive comedy. From the second Katy Murphy steps on stage as Tiffany Gold - a delightfully unhinged, high-stakes blend of old-school American game show host and glam model - the audience is completely in her grip. Murphy’s energy is magnetic; you are just completely drawn in.
The brilliance of the show hinges on its unique setup: someone pre-purchases a £30 premium ticket to be part of the show as the 'star player'. This star player's sole job is to entertain the audience by partaking in three testing games in a high-stakes quest to win back the price of their ticket.
Our guest player on the night was Ben, a poet who also performs his own work at the Fringe. Having had some TV game show experience, Ben slotted into the role with ease. On the night, he matched the challenges and won the £30 back. He was then faced with a dilemma at the end: did he want to take the refund, or would he give in to both the pleas of Tiffany to not take the refund? I won't reveal Ben's choices or any of his challenges, as it was all personal stuff to Ben's life, but safe to say there was a detailed audience debrief in the foyer afterwards.
With so many possibilities and a different star player each night, it guarantees a new performance each time. It's an ingenious concept that works so well. But it truly only works due to Tiffany and the delivery of the character.
Murphy's delivery and the ability to bring together an audience. We all left feeling that we've shared a special and unique evening together. Tiffany Gold might be iconic, but it's Murphy's quick wit, ruthless charm, and impeccable comedic timing that makes every second unpredictable. It’s sharp, inventive, and hands-down one of the greatest nights you can spend at the Fringe this year. Five stars, and worth every single penny (even if you don't get the refund)!
